Reaction Steps

49.5 g of tin dichloride dihydrate are added to 16.0 g of 3,4-dimethoxy-5-nitro-4'-(trifluoromethyl)benzophenone (dissolved in 300 of ethanol), whereupon the mixture is stirred at 75° for 30 minutes. Thereupon, the reaction mixture is poured into 800 ml of ice-water. It is neutralized with 28 percent sodium hydroxide solution and extracted three times with 600 ml of methylene chloride. The combined methylene chloride phases are washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. After recrystallization from methylene chloride/hexane there is obtained 5-amino-3,4-dimethoxy-4'-(trifluoromethyl)benzophenone of melting point 95°-96°.
