Reaction Steps

4-Methylphenylsulphonyl isocyanate (0.66 ml) was added to a stirred suspension of compound C (0.48 g) in acetonitrile and the mixture was heated at reflux for 2.5 hours. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and the product was collected by filtration to give 3-benzoyl-6-ethyl-2-methyl-4-[(4-methylphenylsulphonyl)amino]pyridine (D) (0.65 g) as a solid, m.p. 244°-246° C.; NMR (d6 -DMSO): 1.19(t, 3H), 2.13(s, 3H), 2.31(s, 3H), 2.65(q, 2H), 7.08(s, 1H), 7.15(d, 2H), 7.32(d, 2H), 7.50-7.68(m, 5H), 12.63(s, 1H); mass spectrum (+ve FAB, glycerol/methanol): 395(M+H)+.
