Procedure

In a mixture of 85 ml of ethanol and 40 ml of 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, 20-aminoeicosanoic acid (500 mg, 1.53 mmoles) was dissolved at 40° C. To the obtained solution, while maintained at 40° C., was gradually added maleic anhydride (3.75 g, 38.3 mmoles) over a period of 3 hours. The pH of the reaction mixture was kept at 8-10 during the addition. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and then treated in the same manner as in Reference Example 4, to give N-(19-carboxynonadecyl)maleamic acid (538 mg, 83%) having the following properties.
