Procedure
A mixture of 26.1 g of 4-benzoyl-4'methylbiphenyl, 18.6 g of N-bromosuccinimide and 0.18 g of azaisobutyronitrile in 600 mL of carbon tetrachloride was heated to boiling for 4 hours. The brown solution obtained was filtered and evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from cyclohexane. There are obtained 29.9 g (89%) of 4'-(bromomethyl)-4-biphenylyl phenyl ketone as colorless crystals with a m.p. of 110°-112° C.
