Procedure
A solution of 1.1 ml of thionyl chloride in 2 ml of chloroform was added to a boiling solution of 3.37 g of 8-(3-hydroxypropylcarbamoyl)-3-methyl-4-oxo-2-phenyl-4H-1-benzopyran, prepared as described in U.S. Pat. No. 2,921,070 and in the U.S. Pat. No. 5,403,842, and the applications referred to above, in 20 ml of chloroform. After stirring for 90 minutes under refulx, the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was crystallized from acetonitrile to give 3 g of pure (B), m.p. (188) 193°-194° C., as described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,403,842.
