Potassium tert-butoxide (1.08 g, 8.62 mmol) was added to a solution of 1-benzyl-4-hydroxypiperidine (1.5 g, 7.84 mmol) in dimethylsulfoxide (5 mL) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. 2-Fluoro-3-methylpyridine (957 mg, 8.62 mmol) was then added and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water, and the organic layer was separated and washed with sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and brine. The organic solution was then dried over magnesium sulfate concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with dichloromethane:methanol, 100:0 to 70:30, to afford the title compound as a solid in 85% yield, 1.9 g. 1H NMR(CDCl3, 400 MHz) □: 1.79-1.94(m, 2H), 1.98-2.09(m, 2H), 2.17(s, 3H), 2.37-2.47 (m, 2H), 2.68-2.77(m, 2H), 3.61-3.51(bs, 2H), 5.12-5.20(m, 1H), 6.74(m, 1H), 7.24-7.37(m, 6H), 7.95(m, 1H); LRMS APCI m/z 283 [M+H]+
