Procedure
A mixture of 20 g of 3-methoxy-4-nitrotoluene, 21.6 g of N-bromosuccinimide and 0.3 g of dibenzoyl peroxide in 120 ml of CCl4 is heated at reflux for 5 hours. The solvent is evaporated off under vacuum, the residue is taken up in water, extracted with DCM, washed with water, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated under vacuum. 11.35 g of the expected product are obtained after crystallization from EtOH, mp=98° C.
