A mixture of 0.53 g of diethyl N-(4-[2-(2-pivaloylamino-4-hydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-6-yl)ethyl]benzoyl)-L-glutamate, 3 mL of 1N sodium hydroxide, and 50 mL of methanol is stirred at room temperature for 70 hours and then acidified with glacial acetic acid and filtered. The solid thus collected is washed with methanol and dried to yield N-(4-[2-(2-amino-4-hydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-6-yl)ethyl]benzoyl)-L-glutamic acid, m.p. >250° C.; 1H NMR (dTFA) delta 7.85 (d, J=7.9 Hz, 2H, Ar), 7.45 (d, J=9 Hz, 2H, Ar), 5.00-5.25 (m, 1H, CH2COOH), 1.7-3.9 (m, 13H, CH, 2° aliphatic).
