Procedure
4.0 g of ethyl [{1-(6-ethyl-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-1-propyl}thio]acetate and 2.6 g of sodium hydroxide were dissolved in a mixture of 20 ml of water and 20 ml of ethanol. The solution was heated under reflux for 2 h. Ethanol was distilled off and the residue was washed with ether. The aqueous layer was acidified and extracted with chloroform. The extract was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified according to silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane=2:8) to obtain 2.8 g of the intended compound in the form of white crystals.
