A process for producing 4-amino-3-methyl-N-ethyl-N-(β-hydroxyethyl)aniline sulfate which comprises nitrosating N-ethyl-N-(β-hydroxyethyl)-m-toluidine with an alkyl nitrite in an aqueous alcohol solution containing 30-90% by volume of the alcohol and about 0.5 to about 1 mole of sulfuric acid per mole of the N-ethyl-N-(β-hydroxyethyl)-m-toluidine to form N-ethyl-N-(β-hydroxyethyl)-3-methyl-4-nitrosoaniline sulfate, and catalytically hydrogenating the N-ethyl-N-(β-hydroxyethyl)-3-methyl-4-nitrosoaniline sulfate.
