Procedure
1.0 g of 4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxy-5'-nitro-4-phenylbutyrophenone is held at 200° for 1 hour with 8 g of pyridine hydrochloride. The reaction mixture is poured while still warm into ice-water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is washed with 1N hydrochloric acid and subsequently with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. The dark residue obtained is chromatographed on a 30-fold amount of silica gel with ethyl acetate. From methylene chloride/hexane there is obtained 3',4'-dihydroxy-5'-nitro-4-phenylbutyrophenone in the form of yellow crystals of m.p. 118°-119°.
