A solution of 3-(4-hydroxymethyl-phenyl)-propionic acid (720 mg, 4.0 mmol, Example 2a) in ethanol (20 mL) is treated with MnO2 (350 mg, 4.0 mmol) and the resulting suspension is stirred at 80° C. for 18 h. Another portion of MnO2 (500 mg, 5.7 mmol) is added and stirring is continued at 80° C. for 2 days. The mixture is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated to give 3-(4-formyl-phenyl)-propionic acid (500 mg) as a brown solid; LC-MS: tR=0.72 min.
