Procedure
A solution of ethyl carbazate (435 mg, 4.18 mmol) in toluene (6 ml) was slowly added dropwise to a solution of (1,3-dioxo-1,3-dihydro-2H-isoindol-2-yl)acetaldehyde (719 mg, 3.80 mmol) in toluene (12 ml), and the mixture was stirred at 75° C. for 3 hours. Crystals were collected by filtration and washed with diethyl ether to give 612 mg (58.5% (2 steps)) of the desired product as a solid.
