Procedure
3-chloro-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (5.0 g) was added in small portions to stirred fuming HNO3 (90%, 15 mL) cooled on ice. After completion of addition, the orange mixture was allowed to warm to 20° C. and stirring was continued for 2 h. Ice water (50 mL) was added, and the precipitated product was collected by vacuum filtration to yield 5.4 g of 3-chloro-4-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzoic acid as a bright yellow solid.
