A suspension of (S)-2-acetylamino-3-(3-bromo-4-fluoro-phenyl)-propionic acid (2.5 g, 8.2 mmol) in HCl (6.0 M in water, 5.0 mL) was heated at 100° C. for 2 h and then cooled to 0° C. The resulting solid was collected by filtration to give the title phenylalanine as a light tan solid (2.1 g, 86%). MS (ESI+): mass calcd. for C9H9BrFNO2, 261.0; m/z found, 261.8 [M+H]+. 1H NMR (400 MHz, D2O): 7.50 (dd, J=6.6, 2.1, 1H), 7.21 (ddd, J=8.4, 4.7, 2.2, 1H), 7.14 (t, J=8.7, 1H), 3.90 (dd, J=7.7, 5.5, 1H), 3.16 (dd, J=14.7, 5.4, 1H), 3.04 (dd, J=14.7, 7.7, 1H).
