4-(2-keto-1-benzimidazolinyl)piperidine butylphthalimide (1.42 g, 3.39 mmol) was dissolved in 30 mL of methanol. To this solution was added anhydrous hydrazine (426 mL, 13.57 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 hours. The resulting precipitate was filtered and discarded. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness, and the residue was dissolved in dichloromethane and filtered again. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness to give the title compound as a solid.
