A mixture of the product of step 2, pyridine (3.1 ml, 38.4 mmol) and (CH3)3CCOCl (3.2 ml, 25.6 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (100 ml) was stirred for 2 h, then poured into cold water. The whole was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×100 ml) and the combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to afford 2-fluoro-4-(4′-methoxybenzylmercapto)phenyl-2,2-dimethylpropanamide. MS (Cl) m/e 348 (M+H)+.
