1.09 g of 3-t-butoxy-4-{3-[(3,4-difluorobenzylamino)-(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl]phenylamino}-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione [prepared as described in step (c) above] was dissolved in 30 ml of dichloromethane. 2 ml of trifluoroacetic acid were added to the resulting solution. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes, and then the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. Toluene was added to the residue, followed by azeotropic distillation twice. The resulting white solid was suspended in diethyl ether and collected by filtration, to obtain 830 mg of the title compound as a white solid.
