20,21 -Dimethylpregna-5,20-dien-3β-ol (6, 400.3 mg, 1.218 mmol) in 5 ml of methylene chloride was oxidized with pyridinium chlorochromate (525.4 mg 2.437 mmol) for 42 h. Ether (3.5 ml) was added and the suspension was filtered through a 5 mm dia.×60 mm high column of silica gel. The column was further eluted with 3.5 ml of ether and the combined filtrates were concentrated under reduced pressure. Flash chromatography of the resin followed by recrystallization from aqueous ethanol gave yellow crystals (43.6 mg, 0.134 mmol l1). m.p. 157-165° C.
