Reaction Steps

To a solution of 226 mg of sodium methoxide in 5 ml of tetrahydrofuran was added dropwise a solution of 1.22 g of N-chlorocarbonyl-N-(2-methoxybenzyl)-2-phenoxyaniline in 5 ml of tetrahydrofuran under ice-cooling with stirring, followed by stirring at room temperature for 20 minutes. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate, and the extract was washed with 5% hydrochloric acid, a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, successively, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. After removal of the drying agent by filtration, the solvent was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent; ethyl acetate-hexane=1:6) and recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 1.18 g of N-(2-methoxybenzyl)-N-methoxycarbonyl-2-phenoxyaniline.
