A mixture of 5,7-dimethoxy-4-(4-nitrophenoxyl)quinoline (50 mg, 0.15 mmol), Zn dust (100 mg, 1.50 mmol) and ammonium chloride (32 mg, 0.60 mmol) in methanol (3 mL) was heated at reflux for 1 h. The mixture was filtered through celite and washed with CHCl3. The organic layer was washed with 10% NaOH solution and brine, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated to afford 4-(5,7-dimethoxyquinolin-4-yloxy)phenylamine as an off white solid. LCMS m/z=298 (M+1); 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ: 8.44 (d, 1H, J=4.8 Hz), 7.00 (s, 1H), 6.83 (d, 2H, J=8.8 Hz), 6.65-6.63 (m, 3H), 6.32 (d, 1H, J=4.8 Hz), 5.11 (br s, 2H), 3.89 (s, 3H), 3.86 (s, 3H).
