To a solution of ethyl (1E)-N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)sulfonyloxyethanimidate (14 g, 49.12 mmol) in 1,4 dioxane (25 mL) is added HClO4 (7.0 mL, 70% in water) at 0° C. and the reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture is diluted with water and extracted with DCM (2×50 mL). The combined organic extracts are dried over sodium sulphate and filtered. The crude material is used without further purification (10 g, theoretical yield).
