4-(3-Bromopropyl)-1,2-dichlorobenzene (Chem Abs No. 29648-26-8, 1.30 g) was added to ethanolamine (2.8 ml) and the mixture stirred at 60° C. under nitrogen for 2 h. The mixture was concentrated under vacuum at 80° C. and the residue was partitioned between saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (100 ml) and ethyl acetate (100 ml). The phases were separated, the aqueous layer was re-extracted with ethyl acetate (100 ml) and the combined organic extracts were washed with water (2×100 ml) and brine then dried (Na2SO4). The solution was concentrated under vacuum to give the title compound as a pale yellow liquid (1.10 g).
