To a solution of 2-(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)pyridine-4-carbonitrile (100 mg, 0.54 mmol) in dichloromethane (5 mL) was added N-bromosuccinimide (102 mg, 0.57 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at r.t. for 3 hrs. It was then purified by flash column chromatography (EtOAc/Hexane) to afford 2-(5-bromo-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)pyridine-4-carbonitrile (140 mg, quantitative yield) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 3.67 (3H, s), 7.70 (1H, d, J=4.8 Hz), 8.04 (1H, s), 8.19 (1H, s), 8.81 (1H, d, J=4.2 Hz). [M+H] Calc'd for C10H7BrN4, 264. Found, 263, 265.
