A solution of 1,3-difluoro-2-methyl-benzene (15 g, 0.12 mol) in H2SO4 (100 mL) was treated drop-wise with 65% HNO3 (11.4 g, 0.12 mol) at −10° C. and the resultant mixture was stirred for 30 min. The mixture was poured into ice-water and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give 1,3-difluoro-2-methyl-4-nitro-benzene (16 g, 78%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.80 (m, 1 H), 6.95 (m, 1 H), 2.30 (s, 3H).
