A 1 N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (3.0 mL) is added to a suspension of ethyl 3-amino-1-pyrimidin-2-yl-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylate (500 mg, 2.14 mmol) in 6.0 mL of EtOH. The reaction mixture is heated to 50° C. for 16 h. After cooling to RT, water is added, and the mixture is extracted with EtOAc (3×20 mL). The aqueous layer is cooled to 0° C. and acidified to pH=2 with conc. HCl. The precipitated solid is collected by vacuum filtration and dried in vacuo to give the title compound as an off-white solid.
