To a solution of 2-chloro-3-methoxy-4-nitrobenzaldehyde (Compound 54I, 1.6 g, 7.44 mmol) in methanol (25 mL) at 0° C. was added sodium borohydride (330 mg, 8.91 mmol). After stirring for 1.5 h, water (15 mL) was added. The solid obtained was filtered and dried to obtain the desired intermediate (1.1 g, 69%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.78 (d, J=4.8 Hz, 1H), 7.47 (d, J=5.1 Hz, 1H), 4.83 (d, J=3.6 Hz, 2H), 4.02 (s, 3H), 2.25 (t, J=3.6 Hz, 1H).
