A solution of 4-methyl-5-[(2R)-oxiran-2-yl]-2-benzofuran-1 (3H)-one (INTERMEDIATE 2) (38 mg, 0.20 mmol) in 2 mL ethanol was added to tert-butyl 6,9-diazaspiro[4.5]decane-6-carboxylate (42 mg, 0.20 mmol). The reaction mixture was microwaved at 140° C. for 55 minutes. The solvents were removed in vacuo to provide tert-butyl 9-[(2R)-2-hydroxy-2-(4-methyl-1-oxo-1,3-dihydro-2-benzofuran-5-yl)ethyl]-6,9-diazaspiro[4.5]decane-6-carboxylate which was carried on without further purification.
