To a solution of benzyl (2-hydroxypyridin-3-yl)carbamate (16.1 g, 65.9 mmol) in DCM (500 mL) was added NIS (17.8 g, 79.1 mmol) and the mixture heated at reflux overnight. After cooling, the mixture was filtered to afford benzyl (2-hydroxy-5-iodopyridin-3-yl)carbamate (16 g, 65% yield) as a white solid: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.27 (s, 1H), 7.72 (s, 1H), 7.29-7.40 (m, 5H), 5.21 (s, 2H); MS (ES) m/z 370 (M+H).
