To a solution of the protected indol-6-amine (300 mg, 0.76 mmol) in methanol (9.00 mL) was added potassium hydroxide (941 mg, 16.8 mmol). The reaction was warmed to 70° C. for 4 h. After that time, the reaction was diluted with water (10.0 mL) and methylene chloride (15.0 mL) and the organic phase was removed. The aqueous layer was extracted with methylene chloride (3×15.0 mL), and the combined organic phases were concentrated. The crude residue that remained was purified by flash chromatography (10-25-50% ethyl acetate/hexane) to give a burgundy red solid for 3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-indol-6-amine (66.3 mg, 0.26 mmol, 34%).
