Reaction Steps
A stirred mixture of 4.2 g. (0.015 mole) of 1-ethyl-1,2-dihydro-4-chloro-2-oxo-1,8-naphthridine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (prepared in the manner described in Example 30), 1.5 g. (0.015 mole) of N-methylpiperazine and 1.6 g. (0.015 mole) of sodium carbonate in 20 ml. of ethanol was heated under reflux for 5 hours. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate was evaporated in a rotary evaporator. The residue was triturated with 50 ml. of 20% aqueous sodium carbonate and this mixture was extracted with 50 ml. of diethyl ether. The ether layer was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and was diluted with 50 ml. of ethanol. This solution was slowly acidified with an ethereal hydrochloric acid solution. The precipitate which formed was collected and was recrystallized from ethanol to give 2.5 g. of product as the hydrochloride, m.p. 230°-233° C.
