A solution of 7-(3-cyclohexyl-3-oxoprop-1-enyl)-6-(7-hydroxyheptyl)-1,4-dioxaspiro[4,4]nonane (2.0 g.) in ethanol (50 ml.) was catalytically reduced with hydrogen at a pressure of 7 kg/cm2 and in the presence of a 5% palladium on charcoal catalyst (0.5 g.) at room temperature for 3 hours. The catalyst was then filtered off and the ethanol evaporated off from the filtrate, to give 7-(3-cyclohexyl-3-oxopropyl)-6-(7-hydroxyheptyl)-1,4-dioxaspiro[4,4]nonane (1.4 g.), νmax 3450 cm-1, 1700 cm-1, 1040 cm-1.
