A stirred mixture of 149 g of 2,2-dimethyl-7-methoxy-3-(N-methyl-p-toluenesulphonamido)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-vinyl-1-naphthol, 1200 ml of dioxane and 1380 ml of 0.5 N sulphuric acid is heated until, after 40 minutes, a temperature of 90° C. is reached. The mixture is kept at that temperature during 2.5 hours whereafter it is cooled and extracted three times with chloroform. The chloroform solution is washed with plenty of water and then, after being dried, evaporated in vacuo. The residue is dissolved in acetone. From this solution the product separates as white crystals melting at 142°-144° C. Yield 70%.
