A solution of (2S,3S*,4R*,5R*)-3-[N-(2-methoxy-5-trifluoromethoxybenzyl)amino]-4-methoxycarbonyl-5-methyl-2-phenylpyrrolidine (162 mg, 0.37 mmol) in 6M HCl aq. solution (2.5 ml) was stirred and heated at a gentle reflux for 30 min. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give crude title compound as a dark red amorphous solid. This was recrystallized from ethanol-ether to give the pure title compound (133 mg, 72.5%) as a white solid. mp 137-140 ° C. ##STR9##
