Acetic anhydride (1.6 g) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 3-hydrazino-5-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (3 g) in methylene chloride (30 ml) under ice cooling and then the stirring was continued for 15 minutes. The solution was washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was crystallized from a mixture of methylene chloride and diisopropyl ether to give 3-(2-acetylhydrazino)-5-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (3.37 g).
