A mixture of 2-ethoxycarbonylaminopropiophenone (5 g) and hydrazine (3.5 g) in n-butanol (;b 40 ml) was refluxed for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated, and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel (400 g) using a mixture of chloroform and methanol (100:1) as an eluent. The first fraction was evaporated to give 2-ethoxycarbonylaminopropiophenone hydrazone (4.5 g).
