Reaction Steps

A mixture of 2-hydroxyimino-3'-methylpropiophenone thiosemicarbazone (5 g) and potassium carbonate (6.1 g) in water (44 ml) was refluxed for 4 hours under nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was treated with activated charcoal and filtered by suction. The filtrate was acidified with diluted hydrochloric acid, and the resultant precipitates were collected by filtration, washed with water and dried. The above obtained crude product was dissolved in methanol (150 ml), and the solution was filtered by suction. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was crystallized from diisopropyl ether, collected by filtration, washed with a mixture of methanol and diisopropyl ether, and dried to give 5-methyl-6-(m-tolyl)-1,2,4-triazine-3(2H)-thione (5 g).
