To a mixture of water (3 mL) and concentrated sulfuric acid (7 mL) was added 1.81 g (10 mmol) of 2-methyl-4,6-dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidine. The reaction mixture was stirred for 3 hours and then poured onto ice. The mixture was saturated with sodium chloride and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were combined, dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give crude product (1.4 g, 86%), m.p. 214°-216° C. This product was used in subsequent reactions without further purification.
