Reaction Steps

2-Bromo-4'-chlorohexanophenone (0.02 mol), 1,2,4-triazole (0.10 mol) and acetonitrile (50 ml) were refluxed for 48 hours. The acetonitrile was removed in vacuo and the residue extracted with chloroform (150 ml), Washed with water (5×100 ml) and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate. The solvent was removed in vacuo to leave an oil which crystallised on trituration with petroleum ether (5×50 ml). Recrystallisation from petroleum ether gave 2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2-n-butyl-4'-chloroacetophenone, m.p. 81°-83°.
