Procedure

3.7 g of lithium aluminum hydride are suspended in 60 ml of dry ether; 7.4 g of 2-cyano-2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)methylbicyclo[2.2.2]octane, dissolved in 80 ml of dry ether, are added dropwise so that gentle boiling is maintained. The mixture is then boiled under reflux for 2 hours, then cooled in ice and, in sequence, 2.1 ml of water, 2.1 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution and 15 ml of water are added dropwise. The aluminum hydroxide is filtered off with suction and thoroughly washed with ether. 5.5 g of the title compound are obtained as a colorless oil.
