Procedure
Sodium methoxide (35.1 g) was added portionwise to 3,5-dimercapto-1,2,4-triazole (86.4 g) in methanol (400 ml) with stirring and cooling to 5° to 15° C. under nitrogen. After stirring for 5 minutes, the formed derivative was treated dropwise with benzyl chloride (79.7 g) at 5° to 10° C. over a period of 1 hour. The mixture was then stirred for about 20 hours at ambient temperature, then filtered. The precipitate was washed with a little ice-cold methanol, and then with water, to give 83.2 g of desired product, mp 199°-201° C.
