1 g of 2,2-dimethyl-4-imidazolidinone ((5); R4 =R5 =CH3) (8.76 mmoles) is dissolved in 5 ml acetonitrile. 1 g 2-methylpropyl 3,4-epoxybutanoate ((4); X=isobutyl) (6.32 mmoles) is added and the mixture is boiled for 30 h with stirring. The mixture is cooled, the solvent is decanted off, the resulting dark solid mass is taken up in ethanol, and the solid oxiracetam obtained is filtered off, m.p. 167°-70° C.
