Reaction Steps

1 g of 2,2-dimethyl-4-imidazolidinone ((5); R4 =R5 =CH3) (8.76 mmoles) are heated at 165° C. (external temperature) for 1 h 30 min with 2 g 2-methylpropyl 3,4-epoxybutanoate ((4); X=isobutyl) (12.64 mmoles). 0.17 ml of water and 5 ml ethanol are added, and boiling is continued for a further 2 h. The mixture is cooled and filtered. Oxiracetam is obtained as a white crystalline powder, m.p. 167°-70° C.
