A solution of 7.4 g (27.4 mmol) of 1,3-bis(benzyloxy)-propan-2-one (Araki Y. et al., J. Chem. Soc., Perkin Trans. 1, 1981, 19) in 25 ml of THF was added dropwise at 10° C. and the mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h. Then 8 ml of a 20% aqueous NH4Cl solution was added, and the organic phase was evaporated, dissolved in ether, dried with MgSO4, and evaporated in vacuum to give 7.90 g of 1-benzyloxy-2-benzyloxymethylbut-3-en-2-ol as a crude oil.
