Procedure
150 ml of nitric acid with a density of 1.42 were added at 0° C. to 300 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid and 50 g of p-fluoro-benzoic acid were added thereto at 0° C. over 30 minutes. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for one hour and the temperature was allowed to rise to 20° C. The mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 16 hours and was poured over ice. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the product was washed and dried to obtain 47.6 g of 3-nitro-4-fluoro-benzoic acid melting at 123°-124° C. The said product was reacted as in Step B of Example 1 to obtain 0-(2-nitro-4-carboxy-phenyl)-hydroxylamine melting at 215° C.
