A mixture of 22 ml of trifluoroacetic acid and 5.8 ml of thioanisole was cooled to 0° C., and 5.5 g (11.5 mmol) of (S)-[1-[[[[2-[(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)methylene]hydrazino]sulfonyl]amino]carbonyl]-2-oxo-3-azetidinyl]carbamic acid, phenylmethyl ester were added. After stirring overnight at room temperature, the excess trifluoroacetic acid was evaporated in vacuo and the residue triturated with ether. The trifluoroacetic acid salt was filtered off by suction and dried in vacuo; yield: 2.64 g.
