To a solution of (2R, 3R, 4R, 5S)-6-acetyl-2-iodomethyl-3, 4-diacetoxy-1-oxa-6,8-diazaspiro (4,4) nonane-7, 9-dione (598 mg, 1.32 mm) in anhydrous DME (10 ml) is added, under N2, tetramethylammonium thioacetate (353 mg, 2.37 mm) in one portion. The resulting mixture is heated at 45° C. for 4 hours, then diluted with dichloromethane and washed with brine, dried, and evaporated for dryness. The crude product is purified by thin-layer chromatography to give (2R, 3R, 4R, 5S)-6-acetyl-2-acetylthiomethyl-3, 4-diacetoxy-1-oxa-6, 8-diazaspiro (4,4) nonane-7, 9-dione (500 mg) as a hygroscopic foam.
