One mL of 1N NaOH was added to a solution of 110 mg (0.3 mmol) of 3-[[3-(2-amino-2-oxoethyl)-2-methyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]amino]propanoic acid methyl ester (Example 26) in 5 mL of MeOH, stirred 1.0 hour, then 1 mL of 1N NaOH was added and the mixture stirred 0.5 hour. Water was added, then 2 mL of 1N HCl, and the mixture extracted with EtOAc. This was dried (MgSO4) and concentrated at reduced pressure to give 21 mg (20% yield) of 3-[[3-(2-amino-2-oxoethyl)-2-methyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]amino]propanoic acid.
