Reaction Steps
To 50 ml round bottom flask charged with 30 ml of methanol was added 0.67 g (1.4 mmol) of the product from Example 6, then 2 ml of 2N NaOH. The solution was stirred for 0.5 hr to completion then concentrated. The residue was neutralized with 2N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×10 ml), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The solid was passed through a plug of silica gel eluting with 40% ethyl acetate:hexane. The product so obtained was triturated with hexane to induce solidification, then crystallized from ethyl acetate:hexane to afford 0.47 g (86%) of product as colorless crystals, mp 177-179° C.
