A suspension of 11.6 g (0.060 mol) of 5-chloromethyl-2-methyl-pyrimidin-4-ylamine hydrochloride in 40 ml of dimethyl-formamide was treated with 8.0 ml (0.060 mol) of 5,6,7,8-tetra-hydro-isoquinoline, dissolved at 120° and stirred at 800 for 16 hours. The mixture was cooled, suction filtered, washed with a small amount of dimethylformamide, then with ethyl acetate and dried in a vacuum. 16.5 g (84%) of 2-(4-amino-2-methyl-pyrimidin-5-ylmethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-isoquinolinium chloride hydrochloride were obtained as yellowish crystals; m.p. 242°-244°.
